    Welcome to the first installment of Wired-Up Retro, featuring video game-related content pertaining to controllers, game systems, and mods. In this first episode you'll learn how to get an NES controller working to full capacity on your Atari system (2600 and 7800) with special adapters. This unique controller setup was discovered by a fellow compatriot on Atariage who goes the handle: 0078265317, and I have added on another adapter made by Edladdin to provide for 7800 two-button game functionality with NES controllers. This adapter goes by the name: Seagull78 and it can be purchased here:

    Also discussed and demonstrated in the presentation is the PC gameport controller to Atari 5200 adapter. This is an adapter which I obtained from Atariage member, bohoki, and he has made these available for the past few years.

    The PC to 5200 controller adapter can be combined with an Atari 9 pin controller to PC gameport adapter that Ebay-member ikonsgr74 produces. This offers single button compatibilty for certain Atari 2600, 7800, and Master System joysticks/gamepads on the Atari 5200. It does not have Genesis controller compatibilty. The adapter I've shown in this video has been revised and now can be found here:

    A game controller is a device used with games or entertainment systems to provide input to a video game, typically to control an object or character in the game. Before the seventh generation of video game consoles, plugging in a controller into one of a console's controller ports were the primary means of using a game controller, although since then they have been replaced by wireless controllers, which do not require controller ports on the console but are battery-powered. USB game controllers could also be connected to a computer with a USB port. Input devices that have been classified as game controllers include keyboards, mouses, gamepads, joysticks, etc. Special purpose devices, such as steering wheels for driving games and light guns for shooting games, are also game controllers.

    Game controllers have been designed and improved over the years to be as user friendly as possible. The Microsoft Xbox controller, with its shoulder triggers that mimic actual triggers such as those found on guns, has become popular for shooting games.[1] Some controllers are designed to be best for one type of game, such as steering wheels for driving games, or dance pads for dancing games.

    One of the first video game controllers was a simple dial and single button, used to control the game Tennis for Two. Controllers have since evolved to include directional pads, multiple buttons, analog sticks, joysticks, motion detection, touch screens and a plethora of other features.[2]

    A dual-joystick controller for the original PlayStation
    Main article: Joystick
    A joystick is a peripheral that consists of a handheld stick that can be tilted around either of two axes and (sometimes) twisted around a third. The joystick is often used for flight simulators. HOTAS (hands on throttle and stick) controllers, composed of a joystick and throttle quadrant (see below) are a popular combination for flight simulation among its most fanatic devotees. Most joysticks are designed to be operated with the user's primary hand (e.g. with the right hand of a right-handed person), with the base either held in the opposite hand or mounted on a desk. Arcade controllers are typically joysticks featuring a shaft that has a ball or drop-shaped handle, and one or more buttons for in game actions. Generally the layout has the joystick on the left, and the buttons on the right, although there are instances when this is reversed.

    The WASD KEYBOARD setup is used widely.
    Mouse and keyboard
    A mouse and computer keyboard are typical input devices for a personal computer and are currently the main game controllers for computer games. The mouse is often used with a mousepad to achieve greater speed, comfort, accuracy and smoother movement for the gamer. Some video game consoles also have the ability to function with a keyboard and a mouse. The computer keyboard is modelled after the typewriter keyboard and was designed for the input of written text. A mouse is a handheld pointing device used in addition to the keyboard. For games, the keyboard typically controls movement of the character while the mouse is used to control the game camera or used for aiming. While originally designed for general computer input, there are several keyboard and mouse peripherals available which are designed specifically for gaming, often with gaming-specific functions built-in. Examples include peripherals by Razer, the "Zboard" range of keyboards and Logitech's 'G' series. The numeric keypad found on the keyboard is also used as a game controller and can be found on a number of separate devices, most notably early consoles, usually attached to a joystick or a paddle. The keypad is a small grid of keys with at least the digits 0-9. A Gaming keypad is a specialized controller used for FPSs, RTSs and some arcade type games.

    Motion controllers include the Sega Activator, released in 1993 for the Mega Drive (Genesis). Based on the Light Harp invented by Assaf Gurner,[13] it could read the player's physical movements and was the first controller to allow full-body motion sensing. However, it was a commercial failure due to its "unwieldiness and inaccuracy".[14] Nintendo's Wii system released in 2006 utilizes the Wii Remote controller, which uses accelerometers to detect its approximate orientation and acceleration and an image sensor,[15] so it can be used as a pointing device. The Sixaxis, DualShock 3, and PlayStation Move controllers for Sony's PlayStation 3 system have similar motion sensing capabilities. In 2010, Microsoft released the Kinect for the Xbox 360.

    A subscriber asked me if I can do a video showing how to bypass the hall effect sensor of an Xbox One Controller with a switch. Doing so will result in a "quick trigger" modification in the sense that the switch will emulate reaching the triggers max value in one press as opposed to the trigger normally reaching that max value through the decent of it. I'm sure this mod has its place in some games so I decided to give it a go!     The Atari XE Game System (Atari XEGS) is a home video game console released by Atari Corporation in 1987. Based on Atari's 8-bit 65XE computer, the XEGS is compatible with the existing Atari 8-bit computer software library. Additionally, it is able to operate as either a stand-alone console or full computer with the addition of its specially designed keyboard. In computer mode, it may utilize the majority of peripherals released for Atari's 8-bit computer line. Atari packaged the XEGS as a basic set consisting of only the console and joystick, and as a deluxe set consisting of the console, keyboard, joystick and light gun.

    The XEGS was supported by new titles, such as Barnyard Blaster and Bug Hunt, plus cartridge ports of older games, such as Fight Night (Accolade, 1985), Lode Runner (Brøderbund, 1983), Necromancer (Synapse Software, 1982), and Ballblazer (Lucasfilm Games, 1985).
    John J. Anderson of Creative Computing stated in 1984, when Atari, Inc. had great financial difficulties as a division of Warner Communications, that it could and should have released a new videogame console in 1981 based on its 8-bit computers and compatible with its software library. The company instead released the incompatible Atari 5200.[2] After Jack Tramiel purchased the company, Atari Corp. re-released two game consoles in 1986: the Atari 7800, which had previously been released in a brief test run in 1984; and the Atari 2600 Jr., an updated version of the Atari VCS/2600. The XEGS followed, building on Atari's 8-bit computer line which had started with the Atari 400 and 800.[3] In practice the XEGS is a repackaged Atari 65XE, is compatible with the existing range of Atari 8-bit computer software and peripherals, and thus could function as a home computer.[4]

    Atari conceived the console in a plan to increase the company's console market share while improving sales of its 8-bit home computer family. Providing a "beginning computer" and "sophisticated game console" in one device, was thought to convince more retailers and software developers to support the platform. In May 1987, Atari's then Director of Communications, Neil Harris, updated the online Atari community by outlining this plan. It noted that the XEGS was intended to further the 8-bit line by providing mass-merchants with a device that was more appealing to their markets.[5]

    The system co-existed with the Atari 2600 Jr. and Atari 7800 on store shelves[6] and was occasionally featured alongside those systems in Atari print ads and television commercials.
    The XEGS shipped with the Atari 8-bit version of Missile Command built in,[4] Flight Simulator II bundled with the keyboard component, and Bug Hunt which is compatible with the light gun. As the XEGS is compatible with the earlier 8-bit software, many games released under the XEGS banner were simply older games rebadged. This was done to the extent that some games were shipped in the old Atari 400/800 packaging, bearing only a new sticker to indicate that they were also compatible with the XEGS.

    The XEGS was released in a basic set and a deluxe set. The basic set includes only the console and a standard CX40 joystick (albeit with a grey base to match the XEGS, rather than the original black). The deluxe set consists of the console, the CX40 joystick, a keyboard which enables home computer functionality, and the XG-1 light gun. The keyboard and light gun peripherals were also released separately outside North America.[9] This is the first light gun produced by Atari, and it is also compatible with the Atari 7800 and Atari 2600.[4][10]

    In addition, the XEGS can use the standard Atari 8-bit peripherals, allowing the use of devices such as disk drives, modems and printers.
